For Western Europe, this is a once-in-a-generation event.
On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, northern Spain, and a small corner of Portugal. It is the first time since 1999 that the path of totality has returned to this part of the continent.
Italy will fall just outside that narrow strip where day will genuinely turn to night. But especially in the north, the spectacle will be extraordinary all the same.
In Turin, the Moon will cover around 93% of the solar disc; in Milan, over 92%; in Genoa, nearly 94%. In Rome, coverage will reach roughly 69%, while in Naples it will fall below half. In many cities, the Sun will set before the eclipse is over, making the peak of the phenomenon coincide with twilight.
In the places the path of totality crosses, the Sun will disappear completely for several minutes. That will be the only moment the solar corona becomes visible — the faint outer atmosphere of our star, normally hidden by its own brilliance.
That same night, the Perseids will also peak — the most famous meteor shower of the year. The Moon, by then almost at new phase, will barely light the sky, offering ideal conditions for watching shooting stars.
Watching the eclipse will, however, require one essential precaution.
From Italy, the Sun will never be completely covered by the Moon. Which means it will never be safe to look at it directly, not even at the moment of maximum coverage. Certified eclipse-viewing glasses or dedicated solar filters are required: ordinary sunglasses do not protect the retina and can cause permanent eye damage.
For those inside the path of totality, it will last just over two minutes.
For everyone else, the memory will be of an evening when sunset arrived a few minutes early.
